We all must have read or seen Mahabharat at some point in our lives, but reading the Mahabharat from another character’s point of view is an entirely different experience. 

Yuyutsu: Rise of the Last Kaurava by Aniket S Sharma introduces us to Yuyusu, a character which is often overlooked we talk about the great epic. Being Dhritarashtra’s son but born to a maidservant or handmaiden, Yuyutsu grew up as someone who belonged to the Kaurava family, yet never completely belonged to it. 

What I really loved about this book is the way it makes us look beyond the regular heroes and villians of the Mahabharat. Through Yuyutsu’s eyes, we see get to see the confusion, the struggles, the relationships and how the moral dilemmas that existed behind the events that took place.

Yuyutsu’s decision to stand with the Pandavas, despite being a Kaurava himself, makes his story very interesting. His story definitely will make the readers understand the difference between how important it is to distinguish between right and wrong and ultimately taking the right decision.

This book will definitely make the readers think about how every story has different perspectives which we never get to hear of or are left unheard. Sometimes, the characters standing in the background can also have the most interesting stories to tell or have a different perspective to what has actually happened. 

The writing style is engaging and will surely connect with the readers. The first-person POV will surely connect deeply with the protagonist’s thoughts and emotions. The battle scenes, the philosophical reflections on how people literally lost their moral in the urge to win the battle can be truly felt making the character even more relatable.

Overall, Yuyutsu: Rise of the Last Kaurava is a compelling and memorable read that will remind the readers that true greatness is not determined by birth but by the choices a person makes.
