Work, Workers & Workplaces | Book Review
Title: Work,
Workers & Workplaces
Author:
Parthajeet Sarma
‘Work,
Workers & Workplaces’ by Parthajeet Sarma shows work, workers &
workplaces have evolved over a period of time and how psychology, human
evolution and science has an important place in making these drastic changes. We
also get to see the role technology plays in advancement of a society,
workplace. Basically, technology has been the pivotal part in our society since
many years.
The book is
divided into three Sections:
Part 1: Briefing the
changing nature of work: The definition of work has changed drastically, earlier
work used to involve work which was repetitive and not involving creativity but
with the introduction of computers at workplaces employees/workforce have to
put much emphasis on the creative part as the manual/routine work is mostly
handled by computers. Technology has brought about a tremendous change in
today’s social media, innovation is the key word, and there is a major shift in
services sectors. Now a day, social media is also looked upon for hiring
potential candidates/workforce.
Part 2: Why it is
important for work spaces to change in line: For a business to grow it is
mandatory for the company to adapt to the technological advancement. Companies
are slowly being transformed from physical workplace to virtual workplace where
people can work from anywhere. We also get to see how perspectives change and
how people were first adamant at using
HDTV and how it took nearly thirty years to be accepted by people whereas other
technology get easily adopted by people. We also get to see how businesses
today are looking to automate all the processes and they don’t want to invest
in getting people do the repetitive work, which can be handled by machines and
people are looked upon for tasks which machines cannot do.
Part 3: How this
change can be implemented at work seamlessly: The question that we need to
answer is ‘How do we do it?’ The author tells us how working spaces have
changed from a fixed place of work to coffee shops, restaurants, airports and
how it is easy to work with the digitalization that has come around due to mobile,
free Wi-Fi available at the coffee shops, restaurants, etc. We get to see the
two broad factors that are influencing change in people’s lives, the first
being technology and the second our social changes. IN short, the author tells
us that we should try to keep the workplace relevant and use that as a starting
point of innovation .
My Thoughts:
Overall, we get to see how technology has enabled humans to
work from coffee shops and also from home hence reducing the need to go to
work. The book is filled with great ideas and approaches for understanding how
the workplaces actually work and have undergone changes. The book title has
been aptly kept; readers will actually get to see how work, workers & workplaces
have radically changed. To know more, read Work, Workers & Workplaces.
