Dangling Gandhi | Book Review

Dangling Gandhi
Author: Jayanthi Shankar
Pages: 150

‘Dangling Gandhi’ by Jayanthi Shankar is a collection of 12 short stories where we get to see a range of human emotions, the various class that we people have designated ourselves with, etc.  Each story has a unique concept and plot set in the colonial era of Singapore and some in Southern parts of India. We get to see the living conditions of people from those times and also learn the different cultures and the struggles of people during those times.

Some of my favorite stories are:

·         Punkah Wallah
·         The Peasant Girl
·         Read Singapore!
·         Mother

My Thoughts:

The plot of the story is very unique and each story definitely gives something to the readers. The author has excellently set the plot according to the time period and is very well researched.

The characters are well-developed and each character conveys deep feelings/emotions and some even question the humanity that we people have or have lost.

The narration of the book is very done beautifully and the setting is also described nicely which makes the stories even more exceptional.

The language is simple and lucid. There are places where other dialects used according to the places but there are anecdotes given to make us understand their meaning.

Overall, I enjoyed reading all the stories and would surely recommend it to all.

My Rating: 4/5
