                ‘The Spirit within Her: A Paranormal Mystery’ by Anupama Ramanujam is a book that revolves around Kanika. The first story begins in the British era with a bearded man warning a white skinned girl about straying outside for a long time. But the girl ignored his warning and decided to stay a bit longer as she wanted to stay there and be in the solace of Mother Goddess and explore the surroundings of the temple. People used to believe that the bearded man’s prophecies always come out to be true but they never used to show a clearer picture. Then we follow the present day story of Kanika who is being told by her father-in-law that her voice is echoing as if she is talking in two voices. But she doesn’t take her father-in-law seriously as he is mostly hallucinating and talking to himself or some person whom only he can see. Soon, she herself starts experiencing strange things and that is when she starts panicking. She approaches her best friend who concludes that that she has been possessed by a spirit. From here Kanika sets out on a journey to find out what this spirit wants from her. Who is this white skinned girl? Does the bearded man’s prophecy come true? Whose spirit is this? Why did the spirit choose her only? Will Kanika ever be able to find the link between her and the spirit? Who is this bearded man and what role does he have to play in this whole story? My Thoughts:

 

                The plot is very interesting and scary too at times especially when young Kanika encounters a particular paranormal activity. The story was engaging and the suspense was maintained till the end of the book. The readers will be shocked to know the truth about this spirit.

 

                The characters are well developed and totally relatable. I liked how Kanika even though panicked handles the whole situation very aptly. I must say that Kanika is very lucky to have such a supporting family and friends with whom she can share everything.

 

                Language is simple and lucid and the narration is done excellently. I liked how author has created all together different world with vivid imagination.

 

                The cover is interesting and eye-catching it complements the plot. The title of the book is apt to the plot.

 

                Overall, I must say that it was a mysterious read and at times it will surely leave the readers with Goosebumps. Recommended to all those who love to and want to dive into horror books.
