‘Falling!: A Paranormal Mystery’ by Anupama Ramanujam is the second book in the Indian Mystical Fiction series. In the first book we are introduced to Kanika who herself is possessed by a spirit in this book we are following the story of Darshini. The book begins with Darshini sleepwalking to a place which is forbidden for trespassing. All her family members are worried about Darshini missing in the middle of the night. Darshini’s mother belonged to a one of the respected family in the villages and when Darshini goes missing the whole village starts looking for her in the middle of the night. When her family members find her they all were relieved at first but when they learn about her whereabouts they also get tensed especially her grandmother. Darshini is really scared about the next steps that her family members are going to take after knowing about her missing and that are when young Darshini couldn’t think of anything else but jumping from the second floor of her maternal grandparents home but she somehow controls her feelings. Everything seemed to be going fine but the one day all of a sudden this suicidal feelings come back again and she again starts hearing a voice which tells her to jump. She is shocked that she is again having these suicidal feelings and decides to approach her friend with whom she can share her feelings with. This friend of hers is no other than our Kanika. When Kanika learns about Darshini’s feelings instead of judging her she goes ahead and tries to learn why she is feeling so and if she had these kinds of feelings previously. Together Kanika and Darshini set out on a journey to find what and why this kind of feelings Darshini is experiencing. Why is this site prohibited for people to visit? My Thoughts:
This is the second book that I am reading and I must say that the author has done an excellent work in plotting the story. I loved how the author has built the mystery till the end. Even though this is a horror genre I must that the author has added a bit of humor here and there which is fun to read. I must say that there were times when I actually got Goosebumps too after reading some instances. The pace of the story is perfect.
The characterization is done excellently. I loved Kanika a lot she is patient while listening to her friend and also I loved how she gets to the conclusion. The conversation between Kanika and Darshini were the best and you actually get connected to them. Darshini’s daughter was also cute I loved how she quickly understands her mom and puts forward what she feels like about a topic like when they were discussing about why her mom (Darshini) finds math difficult.
Language is simple and lucid. The narration is done beautifully.
The book cover is very interesting and eye catching. The title of the book is apt to the plot.
Overall, I must say that I enjoyed reading this book as well and would surely recommend it to all.
