’21 Kesari: The Untold Story of
the Battle of Saragarhi’ by Kiran Nirvan is a book that is based on the battle
that took place on 12th September 1897 wherein 21 Sikh soldiers
fought against 10,000 Afghans to protect the fort of Saragarhi. The book is
divided into two parts which are as follows:
·
Part I: In this part the author has given us the
details of the Colonial Era and explained about the battlefield and about the
enemy. Here we get to see how the relations between the British India government
and the Afghanistan were controversial. We also get to see how there were constant
raids taking place which the British administration found to be a major
problem. The author has also explained about ‘The Afridi Tribe’ in detail about
their origin and about the important tribes under them. The author has
explained about the geographical significance and given us in detail about the
political landscape about the area.
·
Part II: In this part the author has described
the war. We get to see the origin of these Sikh Soldiers. How Havildar Ishar
Singh led the 21 Soldiers along with a non-combatant Muslim to fight the war. We
get to see the valor, bravery and the attitude to never backout and to fight selflessly to protect the fort.
I must say that
the author has done in depth research over the events that took place and also
about the 21 Sikhs.
Language is simple
and lucid. The narration is done beautifully and it feels as if the whole
context is being played in front of our eyes. The author has inculcated various
photographs, maps and letter which are very helpful for the better
understanding of the events that actually took place.
The book cover is
also amazing covering all the soldiers.
Overall, I must
say that I got to know a lot about the events that took place during the war
and what and how this overall event took place. I must say that this is a must read
book for everyone.
My Rating:
5/5
