Maybe This or Maybe That | Book Review
Maybe This Or Maybe That – 37 things we
didn’t learn in B-Schools
Pages: 87
Author: Mayank Chandna (Pen Name: Abhaidev)
‘Maybe This or
Maybe That’ by Abhaidev is a book for those who have done MBA or are going to
pursue or pursuing MBA. The book explains the notions, myths and beliefs that
people hold about Management Studies. The book also shows us the outcome vs.
the reality that students face. The book
makes an attempt to answer all the questions that arise in the mind of a person
who has done an MBA or is planning to pursue in a humorous way. The book
discusses the 37 things that one doesn’t get to learn in the business schools. A
person who has done MBA thinks that they are unbeatable and that we are better
than the regular graduates but this book shows us how far our thoughts hold
true.
The overall
goal of the book is to show how people are just following what has been done
and what has been followed from the past and don’t reason or try to find the
logic behind it. Most people even give up on their dreams and turn their dreams
into hobbies. But the end result being most people who do pursue MBA finally
pursue their dream be it writing, photography, etc. The book is written
randomly and the 37 sections discuss the problems, myths and the challenges
that MBA people face after they done or while they are pursuing it. Some of the
sections being as follows:
How blue is my ocean? This chapter tells us that MBA is nothing but
widening of our vocabularies with fancy names that can be used in the
professional life when a person comes out of B-schools and start working as
managers.
Let’s all be a Makkhi-Choos! This
section shows us how a B-school makes a person optimistic about the future of
the organization and teaches the art of selling. The author explains this point
by giving an example when they can even sell rotten eggs, if not to people as
food since it is unethical but to use them in making shampoos. To know more in detail read Maybe This or Maybe That
My Thoughts:
The book is
written in a simple and lucid language and the book doesn’t try to teach or
preach in academic terms, rather explains in a more realistic and humorous way.
The author has tried to throw light on the general notions students getting
into such courses carry and how disappointments can be avoided by avoiding the
myths which follow blindly.
The book is
not only restricted to MBA course and concepts related to it but also for other
people who are planning to pursue it. This book can be an eye opener to people
who have false conception related to MBA and being managers.
The book is
very short i.e. in 87 pages which make it possible for a person to read in one
sitting. The book also handles issues/asks questions which might make a person
question himself. The author has also provided a further must reads/references
list which may help one person to further his knowledge. The main intention of
the book is to help people who intend to take the most coveted MBA course if
one is pursuing it or if one has already completed the degree it will help the
person to survive the corporate life. Overall, it is a good book and a person who is
looking to pursue the course or one who has completed the course should read
it.
My Rating: 4/5
