Hungry Gods | Book Review
Hungry Gods
Author: Richa Lakhera
Pages: 204
Publisher: Rupa Publication
‘Hungry Gods’ by Richa Lakhera is a crime thriller which involves drugs, sex cults and also introduces us to the world of glamour that is placed above the world of crime and corporate. The story begins with the murder of Dinesh Thackray with Inspector Dorab Silva investigating the murder but little does Inspector Silva knows that it is just the start and he will soon be investigating many more murder cases. While Inspector Silva is solving the murder mystery of Mr. Thackray we are introduced to the other characters. The lives of all the people are entangled with the life of Dinesh and are presented to the readers in such a way that the readers will be at times eager to know what is going ahead and will keep the readers on edge throughout the book. The entire storyline depends on Medici, a pharmaceutical company that is selling medicines at a very high cost while breaking all sorts of laws. The company also has its own setup and its own studio to make a TV Series and a movie – Healers – whose main purpose is to promote its own Heal drugs, but it is nothing more than an amalgamation of violence, crime, sex and rape. Overall, we get a glimpse of a darker world where sexual afflictions, drug abuse, incest plaguing people from each part of the society ranging from the poor to the rich and famous people of the city. Will Inspector Dorab be successful in finding the culprit and put him behind the bars? To know more read Hungry Gods.
My
Thoughts:
The writing style of the author is
intriguing and the scenes and settings are written in detail. The book is set
in two timelines i.e. 1993 and the present time which may create a bit of confusion
but the end will clear all the doubts one has. The characters are built in
detail and each and every aspect of their life are described in detail that one
can makes an image of them in their mind. The POV is written in third person
and at some point it is in first person and we get to know why it is so at the
end of the story. The plot is very surprising and the subplots too are very
well written and is a maze where the readers will be confused at first but it
is a delight to read. Finally the author has dealt with a very sensitive matter
and to think of it writing as a fiction the author has done a good job. Overall,
describing Hungry Gods in a few words would be the author has depicted the real
world i.e. a dark, sadistic world that is there around us but not everyone around
is aware of what is happening in the real life. The writing pace of the author
is excellent, the characters are well-written and full of surprises. I liked
this book a lot and would suggest this to someone who is not disturbed by provocative thoughts and obscene actions, violence and abusive
language
My Rating: 4/5
